Walmart announced today that it plans to open five automated fresh food distribution centers in the U.S., according to a report from CNBC.
Similar Walmart facilities average approximately 700,000 square-feet and feature automation systems for frozen and chilled products designed to pick perishable items for store shipments or for customer e-commerce orders, according to the report, while the news plays into a larger pattern of recent automation initiatives by Walmart.
"We know what we own, in what quantity and where it is, all in near real time," Dave Guggina, supply chain EVP at Walmart, said in a CNBC interview quoted by the report. "And we know that at a level of proficiency that is significantly improved than what we've been able to achieve with manual processes or legacy software."
