Walgreens is expanding the number of locations that will rely on the company's micro-fulfillment centers that boast robotics for fulfilling prescriptions.
The robots fill thousands of prescriptions which helps reduce pharmacy staff time and provides more time for interaction with patient and clinic services, according to a CNBC report.
Walgreens debuted its robot-powered centers four years ago and held back expansion in 2023. It's expanding after making upgrades and creating new internal tools at the centers.
As of February 4,800 stores are served by the 11 fulfillment centers. The goal, according to the news report, is to have 5,000 stores being served by end of year.
Walgreens said the centers have generated approximately $500 million in savings by cutting excess inventory and boosting efficiency, according to Kayla Heffington, Walgreens pharmacy operating model vice president, who told CNBC that stores using the fulfillment option are doling out 40% more vaccines than those that aren't.
