Vending machines offering self-test kits for sexually transmitted infections have proven helpful in reaching young people, according to a U.K. study reported by the Sexually Transmitted Infections journal, Medriva reported.

A year-long pilot at 11 publicly available vending machines at seven sites in Brighton and Hove, as well as four in Bristol, offered HIV tests and sampling kits for other infections. The vending machines were well accepted by people aged 16 to 35, especially those who rarely get tested.

A total 2,536 kits were dispensed during the test. Increased confidentiality, immediate access and convenience were cited as the main reasons for using the machines.

A total 92% of respondents called the machines user friendly, while 97% said they were willing to recommend them to others.
