Samsung announces innovations, ecosystems approach for SmartThings, Knox, Bixby, Tizen for developers

Samsung has announced a raft of products and services, with a focus on ecosystem development, smart homes technology, and more during its annual developer's conference, according to a press release.

Samsung has announced a raft of products and services, with a focus on ecosystem development, smart homes technology, and more during its annual developer's conference, according to a press release.

Samsung also announced strategy priorities include health and safety along with security and sustainability during the Samsung Developer Conference 2023 event at the Moscone Center in San Fransisco.

The company highlighted One UI 6, the latest installment of the Samsung user interface for user devices.

"Over 500 million Samsung products are sold every year, and the number of people using Samsung accounts exceeds 600 million," Jong-Hee (JH) Han, vice chairman, CEO and head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, said in the release. "To us, this is both a huge achievement and a profound responsibility.

"Samsung's technologies connect countless people, products and services," Han added. "I believe that if you — our developers and partners — join this journey of innovation, we can create greater opportunities and a brighter future together."

Samsung is also leaning into the smart homes movement, with over 290 million users of Samsung SmartThings products, and the SmartThings Home API has been designed to help app developers create apps compatible with the Samsung ecosystem.

The Samsung SmartThings Context API has also been updated with features aimed at AI and sensing technology.

Other announcements included:

• SmartThings Hub is to be embedded in new and existing products, including sound bars and TVs.
• Internet of Things sensors from Samsung partner Aqara aim to increase smart home accessibility.
• The next-gen Samsung Smart Tag2 debut includes battery life of up to 700 days and IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, along with leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology.
• Bixby integration with SmartThings is expanding, with development underway for increased understanding of context, intention, and user language.
• Knox Matrix, Samsung's blockchain-based security solution for device ecosystems, is receiving updated security, including Credential Sync and Trust Chain.
• Knox Vault availability is expanding to more devices, such as Neo QLED 8K TVs in 2023 and select Galaxy A smartphones in 2024.
• The Tizen operating system will be available on more devices and will feature on-device AI and Home AI Edge Hub.
• Samsung healthcare announcements included SmartThings and Samsung Food experiences.
• Samsung has announced its clinical research collaboration with partners including Brigham & Women's Hospital, MIT Media Lab, Tulane University, and Samsung Medical Center.
• Samsung said it will continue the Samsung Privileged Health SDK program to allow tech development leveraging the Samsung BioActive Sensor.
• Samsung Food will include Food AI and Vision AI technology development.
