Light Fidelity, also known as Li-Fi, is an emerging technology that aims to challenge Wi-Fi by using light to transmit data, and it could provide speeds of up to 100 times that of Wi-Fi, according to CNET.

Based on physics research by Harald Haas in Germany, Li-Fi is still under development, including work by groups like The LiFi Group; the hope is eventually to reach ultra-fast data speeds up to 224,000 MBPS.

"Security is another key advantage of Li-Fi because the signals are confined to the area illuminated by the light source and cannot penetrate walls," according to a statement from a LiFi Group spokesperson to CNET. "The risk of unauthorized access is greatly reduced."

Potential applications include smart homes, smart cities, manufacturing, and more.
