An outdoor vending machine offering kratom tea, which has psychoactive properties, has raised health concerns in Thailand, according to a Strait Times report.
The kratom leaves, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, can cause heightened alertness, talkativeness and physical energy. High doses, according to the agency, can create a sedative effect and lead to addiction.
The machine in Hat Yai, Thailand offers beverages containing kratom for 10 baht (28 cents) a cup.
The substance was removed as a prohibited substance in 2021, but Thailand prohibits its sale in vending machines or to persons under 18 years of age and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Nor can kratom be sold in dormitories, educational institutions, dormitories, zoos, public parks and amusement parks.
