Joby Aviation, which develops electric air taxi vehicles, has received Part 141 flight academy certification from the FAA for its Watsonville, California-based Joby Aviation Academy, according to a report from Flying Magazine.

The academy plans to offer instruction in private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot and certified flight instructor courses, according to the report.

"As a former airline pilot, I'm particularly looking forward to seeing our flight academy grow in both courses and students in the coming years as we offer highly competitive prices and strong training curricula that position graduates for success in the industry," Bonny Simi, president of operations at Joby, said in a press release on the FAA certification.

Joby develops electronic vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, also known as eVTOLs.

The sector is in its infancy but has attracted interest from incumbent travel providers along with competition between developers including Joby, Lillium Air Mobility, and Archer Aviation.

In October, Flying Magazine reported that Joby has partnered with Delta to develop shuttle service to Delta terminals using eVTOL vehicles.
