Retailers in Detroit will be required to accept cash by Sept. 11 under a newly passed law requiring businesses that don't accept cash to offer devices such as kiosks that convert cash into cards, according to a Detroit Free Press report.
Businesses that provide kiosks to transfer cash into cards will be required to offer the service at no fee and require no more than a $5 deposit.
Businesses that fail to abide by the rule could face a fine of $500 plus 90 days in jail.
The law does not affect home-based businesses or transactions conducted by phone, mail or online.
Exceptions also include membership wholesale clubs and parking garages.
