China EV maker BYD overtakes Tesla in monthly sales data

China-based EV company BYD has surpassed Tesla in monthly sales in 2023 according to a report from Finbold.

In the first half of 2023, BYD sold 1,191,405 vehicles for an average of 198,567 monthly sales; by contrast, Tesla sold 888,879 vehicles in the first half of the year, averaging 148,146 monthly vehicles sold, according to the report.

Report data also showed that the top eight global EV manufacturers (by average monthly 2023 sales data) included four Chinese firms, with the remainder based in the United States or Germany.

The eight leading global EV manufacturers are listed in the report as follows (including average monthly sales numbers):

1. BYD (198,567).
2. Tesla (148,146).
3. BMW (36,799).
4. GAC Aion (35,348).
5. Volkswagen (209,852).
6. SGMW (191,767).
7. Mercedes (165,213).
8. Li Auto (23,312).
