California has passed legislation to phase out diesel trucks, according to a report from the New York Times.
After Monday, Jan. 1, California will ban diesel trucks moving goods in and out of its ports, according to the report, with the goal of making port trucking carbon-free by 2035.
"In the long run, I am quite confident we can decarbonize the heavy-duty truck sector," James Sallee, a professor in the department of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Berkeley, said in the report. "But I don't know that the industry is ready to overcome the various barriers to rapid deployment."
