Alabama awards $9M-plus for EV charging stations

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey awarded more than $9 million for EV charging funds, according to a 1819news.com report.

The governor awarded close to $1 million to three East Alabama businesses to fund electric vehicle charging stations from grants that represented the remaining funds from Alabama's portion of the nationwide Volkswagen settlement plan for EV charging stations.

Ivey also awarded $8.2 million from Volkswagen settlement funds and state funds to support chargers at 44 locations to be administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The three businesses awarded grants are:

  • Smiths Station: $621,232 to Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores to install a station at a Love's location at 747 Lee County Road 248. Love's is providing a $155,308 match.
  • Phenix City: $240,596 to CatCard LLC for two charging stations at Burger King, 1820 Stadium Drive. CatCard is providing a $106,866 match.
  • Gadsden: $77,818 to Ira Phillips Inc. for three charging stations at the Venue at Coosa Landing Event Center, 201 George Wallace Dr. The company is providing a $41,940 match.
