It's no secret that business has boomed for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who've embraced the opportunities presented by kiosks of all shapes and sizes in the last 5 years. And according to Richard Thompson (Global OEM Sales Vice President, Zebra Technologies), there remains huge untapped potential to enable the automation and transformation of self-service across many industries.
Consumer confidence is growing
Self-service is now part of all our days, with people valuing the speed and convenience of kiosks, whether placing an order in a quick service restaurant (QSR), picking up a parcel or collecting a cinema ticket.
Kiosks are a familiar site too. The next time you're out with the family visiting retailers or hospitality, have a look around and see what you can spot – wall-mounted, desk-mounted, outdoor or customized kiosks – you'll likely see dozens dotted around.
As we turn to what next, new technologies are becoming available which present the opportunity to create interesting and engaging applications, and I'm continually impressed by these developments made by our team and OEM customers.
Already we're seeing some incredibly innovative new use cases. When you're travelling, think of all the ways kiosks make life easier. From the moment you arrive at the airport, *the airline check-in is handled efficiently via a kiosk which plays a pivotal role in queue busting; especially important when you're in a hurry and don't have time to join a line. Then, once you get to your destination and arrive at the hotel, a kiosk can help you check-in to your room at any time, reducing the requirement for 24/7 manned reception desks. And then when you're out for lunch on the go, a kiosk within a QSR provides you an automated order service, again reducing your wait time so you can make the most of your holiday.
Of course, the positive impact goes beyond travel and hospitality. I was interested to see how many applications for kiosks were on display at the recent Retail Technology Show at London's Olympia. In store, colleagues are particularly well served with the ability to look up prices and check stock levels, providing a better experience for themselves and consumers.
Crucially, in the race to new solutions a commitment to quality should never be sacrificed. I'm proud that at Zebra we don't compromise on the market-leading standard of our components, however competitive the market.
